The Shift Toward One Connected Platform
According to the 2025 State of School Transportation Report, in a survey of 510 school administrators, 73 percent say budget shortages had at least some impact on their transportation operations this past year. In spite of these shortages, students still need to arrive at school safely and on time. Thus, districts need to find operational efficiencies wherever possible to minimize the impact of these shortages while continuing to deliver the high-quality service that students and parents expect.
Automated K-12 bus routing software can help drive efficiency for transportation departments in myriad ways. The ability to automate workflows is one example. But bus routing software can help transportation districts operate more efficiently in other, less obvious ways. Software that allows for personalized views, so each user gets a fast and focused view of only the data relevant to their role, can help transportation professionals make decisions faster and more easily, saving time on their daily tasks so they can do more.
Why Personalization Matters
That’s where personalization and role-based views become an intentional aspect of a platform’s design. Research on role-based dashboards describes personalized, scoped views to keep each person’s attention on the responsibilities tied to their own role, rather than everyone working from an identical view of the same system. Applied to a transportation platform, a router sees their own schools and stops, a depot lead sees their own vehicles and drivers, and a director can still see the whole district when that’s what the moment calls for.
A routing department benefits from having everything in one place, but a personalized view helps each individual get to work quickly and efficiently.
Where EZRouting Fits
Two recent updates to EZRouting, Workspaces and Pagination, build that personalized view directly into the platform, Workspaces scoping what a person sees and the Pagination controlling how quickly they see it.
Workspaces gives every member of a team a personalized, saved view of EZRouting scoped to the students and routes they actually work with. Once a Workspace is active, EZRouting applies that scope consistently across every tab in the platform, from the Dashboard and Students list to Routes, Vehicles, and Stops, and restores it automatically the next time they log in. Workspaces can be built from any combination of schools, grades, depots, programs, rider types, student flags, transportation codes, and user-defined fields, giving each role a personalized view. Each person works from a view scoped to their own responsibilities, giving every role in a department a clear and consistent picture of the students and routes they own.
Pagination works alongside that same idea. It lets a team choose how many students or routes appear on the page at a time, giving every team a fast, filtered page of results the moment they open the Students or Routes tab, no matter the size of the district, so they can focus on making impactful routing decisions. The map updates to match what’s listed on screen, and the new “Show All Students on Map” option in the Operations menu brings the full district into view whenever that broader picture is what’s needed.
Together, Workspaces and Pagination mean a router, a dispatcher, and a director can each open EZRouting and get straight to their own part of the district, without adjusting filters or waiting on information built for the whole system.
