Springtime Bus Route Reevaluation

As the seasons start to change, it’s important for schools to reevaluate their bus routes. When reevaluating, it’s important to check for hazards that may have developed over time such as the growth of trees, leading to areas of lower visibility areas and blind spots. Additionally, changes to spring weather can affect roads and make them slippery or icy which should be taken into account when reevaluating bus routes. Taking the necessary precautions to make sure students are safe is essential, especially during the changing of the seasons.  By reevaluating routes in the springtime, schools can help mitigate potential risks and create a safe transportation environment for their students.

Check for brush growth and blind spots.

Checking for overgrowth of brush and trees, as well as blind spots is helpful to make sure bus routes are designed with the safety of students in mind.  As trees, bushes and other shrubbery can create areas of lower visibility, having a clear path for buses to use reduces the risk of potential accidents.

Reevaluate routes for weather concerns.

In the spring, areas with wetter climates or more rural roads may experience flooding of creeks and rivers that can make dirt roads muddy.  In addition to this, weather such as rain or snow can make roads slippery and hazardous for buses.  By reevaluating routes in these scenarios, schools may choose to avoid certain roads if it is too dangerous.  This helps protect students and make sure they are taken on safe, reliable routes.

Reevaluate traffic patterns.

It’s also important to look at traffic patterns while making adjustments to bus routes. Sometimes the roads can be busier or have less traffic, depending on the time of the year. Plan accordingly and update your stop times if necessary. Keep in mind that it’s important that bus drivers are aware of any changes made to their routes that would create longer or shorter travel times and can adjust their schedules accordingly. With longer days and more daylight in the springtime, it’s even more important for bus drivers to be familiar with the route they take so they can complete their trips safely and on time.

Take a ride without students.

To ensure proper assessment of routes during changing weather conditions, schools can choose to take a bus ride without students on board. This allows for additional care in assessing potential dangers, such as wet or muddy roads, additional traffic, and brush growth. During these rides, schools can modify routes and stops if needed in order to create a safer environment for students.

Making sure that students have safe and efficient bus rides should be a priority for any school. By reevaluating their bus routes in the springtime, schools can help ensure that students are kept safe while traveling to and from school.  Taking into account potential hazards such as trees, visibility issues, weather changes, and traffic patterns can go a long way in creating a safer environment for everyone involved. EZRouting has the right tools to help you evaluate your routes, keeping things both safe and efficient. With the right planning and preparation, schools can create the best transportation plans for their districts.
