Guide to School Bus Post-Trip Inspections

Conducting post-trip inspections of school buses is a critical step in ensuring the safety of students and staff. After each route, post-trip inspections should be performed to identify any potential mechanical issues or areas for improvement. By regularly inspecting school buses post-trip, the safety and integrity of the vehicle is maintained and potential problems can be quickly identified and addressed. This article will explain the importance of post-trip inspections for school bus drivers, staff, and students, and it will provide a guideline for conducting post-trip inspections properly.

1. Dashboard Readings

After each trip, dashboard readings should be checked to ensure there are no mechanical lights on and that the bus has plenty of fuel. If any dashboard lights are illuminated, further maintenance may be required. Additionally, check for other dashboard items such as tire pressure and any brake maintenance lights. This will ensure that the bus is ready to go for its next trip out to pick up students. Record your findings, and report anything significant.

2. Exterior Inspection

A visual inspection of the vehicle should also be conducted. Check for any damage to the exterior of the vehicle such as dents, scratches, or other signs of wear and tear that could indicate a problem with its performance. Additionally, make sure all lights are functioning properly. Record your findings, and report anything significant.

3. Interior Inspection

The interior of the bus should also be inspected by looking at seats and seat belts for any signs of damage or malfunction. Inspect the dashboard and dashboard buttons to make sure they are all in working order, as well as any other components such as the radio and speakers, floors, windows, etc. This will also ensure that the bus is well-prepared for its next trip. Record your findings, and report anything significant.

4. Engine components

Finally, inspect the engine components. Look for any coolant or oil leaks, and check all hoses and belts for signs of wear and tear. Ensure that the battery is properly secured and that all fluid levels are full and that there are no visible signs of damage to any of the engine components. Record your findings, and report anything significant.

Once you have completed your post-trip inspection, be sure to fill out your report for your district’s transportation department. Be sure to note anything of importance to ensure student safety on your bus’s next trip. Keep in mind that EZDistrict has an excellent module for recording information related to both pre and post-trip inspections. This module allows users to immediately report issues to department directors, ensuring that important maintenance doesn’t get forgotten.
